Lily-Livered Toxicity Report: What It Really Says

Recently, Forbes.com published an article purporting to show that people taking CBD are courting hepatotoxicity (liver damage). They wish to convince you that regular use of CBD can harm or kill mice and, by extrapolation, you. Sadly, the study and subsequent article present a clear case of obfuscation.

What the underlying study – published in Molecules – used to support the author’s opinion conveniently leaves out are two important factors, one of which is dosage levels. We’ll rip into the logic of the study in a moment. But first, let’s stipulate that dosing with too much of anything can toast the hardiest mouse – or you, proportionally.

The other difficulty with the study, according to ProjectCBD.org, is that it was carried out using hexane-extracted CBD. In the real world, CO2 extraction and ethanol distillation represent the gold standard used by the major commercial CBD labs. While there may be plenty of boutique products out there still using hydrocarbons for extraction, as the market flushes out, CO2 and ethanol are rising to the top as the cleanest, safest technology.

Hexane, as ProjectCBD.org notes, is a neurotoxin. The researchers tested their CBD and found that it contained <.5% residual solvent. While that may pose no issues in humans at regular dosing levels, what might it do to itty-bitty mice at mega doses?

Speaking of Dosages and Allometric Scaling

In the abstract of the study, the authors state that their test dosages were “allometrically scaled mouse equivalent doses (MED) of the maximum recommended human maintenance dose of CBD in EPIDIOLEX®,” which is the pharmaceutical product patented by Glaxo-Wellcome. Allometric scaling is a guideline used to predict dosage conversions from animal to human models. It takes into account the size and metabolic rates of the different mammals involved.

However, as ProjectCBD points out:

“Using allometric scaling to reinterpret preclinical work needs to be justified. And, in fact, allometric scaling of toxicity may not pertain to cannabinoids. The linear scaling factor is predicated on properties that these oily compounds do not possess.” (emphasis in the original)

We’ll take a look at the doses they force fed (gavaged) the mice with in a moment. First, let’s talk about what happens in real life.

How Much CBD Would You Really Ever Take?

Do you need an extraordinarily high dose of any CBD formulation to derive a benefit? Probably not, unless you happen to be, say, Paul Bunyan. Yet, if you do, a review of the scientific CBD literature published in Current Drug Safety suggests:

“[C]hronic use and high doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD are reportedly well tolerated in humans.”

If the point of the study was to discover whether stratospherically high doses of hexane-extracted CBD are toxic to mice, it was wildly successful. Too much of anything will certainly make a mouse liver cringe at the very least. If they meant to define a safety limit for humans, they should have structured their study in a scientifically-defensible manner.

However, if the real intent was to scare you away from unregulated, non-pharmaceutical CBD ... well, we can only hope they failed. Let your own intelligence be your guide.

Also,
Canine nutritional needs are not that different from your own ...
but …

If you wouldn’t feed a kibble to your child …

… Should you feed it to your dog?

Dear Pet Parent Friends,

I’m Doctor Jason Baker, a long-time Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. I’ve owned a veterinary clinic in Denver, Colorado for over 30 years.

As you might imagine, I’ve seen a lot of dogs in my practice.
Trust me when I tell you, things just aren’t the same as they were three decades ago.

Dogs and cats shouldn’t suffer shorter lives or the illnesses of old age while young.

But I’ve witnessed more and more of this throughout my career. So, I made it my business to find out why.

Believe me, there’s a real problem in the pet food industry that isn’t widely known.

If you feed your dog any of the popular commercial brands, you need to understand what your dog may be eating. Things not listed on the label could easily taint his food, and you would never know it.

Your dog’s exposure to highly-processed foods and treats can rob him of robust health and vitality.

But that’s not all.

Over time, a stew of non-nourishing and contaminant-laden treats and dinner fare can take a mighty toll on Fido.

Read on to learn what I’ve discovered. But be warned, these things that might shock you.

I’ll explain what Big Pet Food doesn’t want you to know and what you can do about it.

First, though, if your doggy just isn’t feeling like a million bucks, it isn’t your fault.

Since I’ve been practicing veterinary medicine for a long time … I can tell you, pet owners pamper their dogs with love and care like no other time in history.

Dogs these days are as much a part of our families as our human children.

But there’s more to canine health than a loving human family. How you feed your puppy matters more now than ever before.

What I discovered, you need to know right now!

Go Smoke a Rope -- and Other Good Ideas

Go smoke a rope. Lately, this formerly dismissive insult has been flipped on its head.

Nowadays, you could take it in the same vein as “Go get a massage,” or, “Go drink a margarita.” If your antagonist told you to go swig a cocktail, you would probably make up and make two.

After all, industrial hemp – formerly the go-to plant for nautical ropes and rigging – also contains medically beneficial cannabidiol, or CBD.

In fact, the high levels of CBD and low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC (the buzz-producing substance), found in hemp make it one of the hottest products on the natural wellness, alternative health circuit today.

According to Statista, U.S. CBD sales vaulted from ~$108 million in 2014 to ~$512 million in 2018. This upward trajectory suggests demand will skyrocket to nearly $2 billion dollars annually within the next four years.

Could so many consumers of the extracts from industrial hemp be on to something? Could the prohibitionists in government have been so wrong all these years?

Will You Be the First to Serve the Silent Generation CBD Market?

Vastly improving quality of life while reaping a generous ROI: Isn’t that the point of CBD?

Because CBD strengthens so many vital elements of our health, the elderly represent the one demographic that could profit from it the most. Many CBD success stories report that once they found the right formula to facilitate remediation of their condition(s), they could either stop their prescription meds altogether or at least whittle them down to a manageable level.

We all know that the older people get, the more they seem to cultivate forests of little amber bottles or mine quarries of pillboxes full of daily medications. In fact, a survey published in MDMag reports that the elderly, on average, fill and refill 9 to 13 prescriptions annually because:

“[T]he side effects from one prescription medication beget a prescription to counteract them, which leads to more side effects, and still another prescription, and so on and so forth.”

It’s a malevolent merry-go-round that, once mounted, they can’t seem to escape. CBD could easily throw the brakes to their Stephen Kingesque carnival ride if given a chance, and your opportunity to capture a sizable chunk of that market should be easy. But will the generation that sprang from the Great Depression actually reach for the lever?

Blood Sugar Diet

... The Blood Sugar Diet may seem oppositional to the prevailing conventional wisdom with its low-carb, high-fat protocol. But it was rather bad science, leading to faulty nutritional recommendations, that probably contributed to your high blood sugar to begin with.

Implement the Blood Sugar Diet and watch your blood sugar plummet to normal, healthful levels in as little as a couple of weeks.

Maintain the lifestyle plan and see how you can head off diabetes or reverse it altogether….

…. In the 1980s, the general population, spoon-fed the over-simplified concept that “you are what you eat,” happily embraced the error of Keys and the AHA.

After all, if you are what you eat, obviously your fat comes from eating fat, at least in theory. Additionally, because carbs have fewer calories than fat -- and everyone knows that too many calories equals weight gain -- it only made sense to rid the diet of high-calorie fats….

…. A diet high in sugar and simple carbs triggers panic in the pancreas. It must produce far more insulin than it otherwise should to try to keep up with more and more sugar flooding the blood stream.

However, there are only so many cells that utilize sugar. Once they’ve taken their share of the molecule, the insulin has nowhere to deposit the sugar except in the fat cells. Hence, weight gain begins to occur.

Once the fat cells have reached their threshold for sugar accumulation, the body becomes insulin resistant, and the blood sugar remains in the blood, wreaking havoc on your vessels, nerves and organs.

The experts now agree that the blame for the epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes lies squarely on the shoulders of low-fat, high-carb diets....

Big Food’s Addictive Chemical X that’s Making You Sick and Addicted

No one sets out in life with a goal of becoming fat and sick.

However, the 2014 numbers[i] show that over 36 percent of American adults and 17 percent of youths carry enough weight to be considered obese. While a certain portion of the population has always been somewhere between overweight and obese, these days, the upward trend towards increased heft and poor health has become noticeable and alarming.

Not only is the national scale bursting its springs, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and mental illness all lurk in the shadows cast by our growing girth.

While we acknowledge that our modern lifestyle involves more sitting and less exercise than in any previous generation, many people with growing waists and decreasing vitality work hard to counteract the effects of a desk job, miles of riding in a car or reclining on a couch. Gym memberships are on the rise; over 55 million people[ii] patronize any one of the 36,000 health clubs across the country.

So what’s really going on? Are Americans ‒ including children ‒  really just a bunch of gluttonous slugs, or does something hide in our common diet that causes excess weight gain and the malaise that follows despite our best efforts?

That’s a good question. Let’s take a look.

Refined Sugar: The Little Carb that Could (Kill You)

What Are Carbs?

You need carbohydrates, also known as starch. Your body uses them for fuel. You find carbs naturally in fruit, milk, honey, nuts, legumes, grains and vegetables. Carbs break down into sugars for your brain and muscles to burn. While vegetables, nuts, whole grains and legumes offer complex carbs, refined sugars and starches offer only simple ones. What’s the difference?

With complex carbohydrates ‒ those still bound in the fiber matrix of the plant ‒ your system takes some time to separate out the starch so your blood sugar rises slowly as you digest the plant. In the meantime, the vitamins and minerals in the food also get absorbed which provides a balanced interaction between the carbs and your cells.[iii]

However, with simple carbs, very little fiber, and often little or no nutritious matter, comes with it. Your body can uptake it immediately.

With refined sugar and starches, most, if not all, nutrition gets stripped away so nothing slows down uptake or provides the chemical mediation for healthy absorption. Let’s talk about that for a moment.
